Once again, a ‘naive thoughts’ posting, before working through Part 3 and its exercises.
I have three existing ‘communities’ that could form the basis of a “Mirrors” exercise: my sailing club, my photographic club and my Rotary club. I have done photography of or with all three and find that I am being increasingly asked to cover Rotary events in particular. However, I am concerned that starting photography motivated by this assignment brief will change an existing dynamic.
I have, therefore, decided to work with the “Window” brief, and have made first contact with a community. Clare Park Bowls Club is a small club, based in central Maidstone, with an ageing and shrinking membership. Their new PRO has approached me to produce some publicity photographs to illustrate and populate a new website, and for other publicity material. I have agreed, subject to being allowed to take pictures for this assignment.
I attended a pre-season meeting at the weekend and introduced myself to some of the committee members, who are happy with what I plan. My initial thoughts are to show the club behind the scenes as well as during matches. There is a work party to carry out pre-season maintenance on 10 April, which I will attend to work, photograph and make some better personal connections. The two months that I expect to spend on Part 3 will cover the work parties, informal roll-ups (starting at the end of April) and a few matches during May. I expect club activities during matches to include the play itself and behind-the-scenes activities such as preparing teas, collating the scores etc.
While I have a vision of the type of images I want to collect, the reality will make itself known. My initial thinking is to present the images in book form. However, these are early days. Watch this space.
